Well they have come back with yet another mutant/zombie car driving killing game, and it seems they want to make a stand by combining two fairly familiar genres in Gears & Guts. As always, you'll find plenty of action in the game, as well as a big bunch of ads for in-game purchases.

In Gears & Guts, you must get rid of hordes of zombies by playing missions located in a vast 3D city. To do that, you'll have to rely on your big arsenal of vehicles, and pump them up with the weapons you find throughout the game. As you progress further, you find yourself leveling up to get a more resistant, damage-dealing ride as well as better chainsaws or bumpers to make madness go further.

One really nice aspect of this game is that it uses some of the old gameplay you used to like so much about Gun Bros or Star Blitz with cars, so you have a huge map to explore (whenever you're not being told where to go) while you make asphalt soup out of your foes. You can use touch or tilt controls scheme as well.

You should probably have a nice high-end device to play this one, since it weighs in at a 360MB download and you can even find some small frame-rate drops or stutters here and there. Other than that, we're in front of a fully eye-candied game with some nice rocking tracks to go with.

Now, just like any other Glu games, there's a somewhat expected annoyance in the form of Ads and In-App Purchases. Not just that, this time it seems to get a little worse. Most of the cars and nice weapons in the game must be obtained by getting Glu coins, which all of us know are close to impossible to get if not through buying them. There's also full screen ads every time you finish a mission telling you to check out some more games. It seems to be less if you play it offline, but it's still annoying to have to deal with pushy advertising. The secondary currency which is 'Bolts' is pretty easy to come by as you go further in the game, but has only a few uses like upgrading your weapons (by using scrap made by destroying some of your equipment).

So there you have it, another freemium game from Glu waiting for you to take a look at. Even with the annoying ads in this game, we will admit that it is a pretty solid game and worth taking a look at. You can get right into running over zombies by grabbing yourself a copy off of the Google Play store for free.

Samsung Series 5 ChromeBook Full Review

The Samsung Series 5 ChromeBook is the first netbook alternative on the market to use the Google Chrome operating system rather than a more traditional OS like Windows. Based in no small part on the Google Cr-48 prototype notebook that we previously reviewed, this 12-inch thin and light laptop offers two years of free Verizon 3G access for the one-time purchase price of $500. Is this a good deal or is the ChromeBook just "a web browser in a box?"

Build and Design
If you've already seen our review of the Google Cr-48 prototype then the overall design and technical specs of the Samsung Series 5 ChromeBook should look very familiar. In truth, it appears as though Samsung engineers did little more than add a few rounded corners and change a few ports on the Google Cr-48.

To that end, the design of the ChromeBook is sort of a hybrid between consumer laptop and low-cost business laptop. You get a traditional clamshell shape with lots of straight lines and rounded corners. Open the glossy lid and you'll see a more modern looking Chiclet-style keyboard and a MacBook-esque touchpad both covered in a "we mean business" matte finish.

The screen lid on our review unit features a glossy "Arctic White" paint job with both Samsung and Google Chrome logos on the left side. Samsung also offers the ChromeBook with a "Titan Silver" finish in case white doesn't look professional enough for you. The lid provides adequate protection but it flexes quite noticeably under heavy pressure. The bottom of the notebook is a basic semi-gloss black plastic chassis that is prone to showing fingerprints and smudges. A quick view of the bottom of the ChromeBook reveals no access plates and no removable battery. The chassis feels pretty durable for a low-cost 12-inch laptop, but you'll hear a few plastic squeaks and creaks if you squeeze the palm rests and twist slightly.

Although I generally like the design of the Series 5 ChromeBook, I'm not sure how potential customers will respond. The ChromeBook is a little too large to fit the mold of the typical 10-inch or 11-inch netbook, but the ChromeBook lacks the performance (more on this later) of larger "notebooks" what share similar exterior dimensions. I suppose only time will tell if consumers and businesses think a Google-enhanced netbook with Verizon 3G access is worth $500.

Ports and Features
The relatively clean exterior of the Series 5 ChromeBook to the port selection on the sides of the laptop. Samsung gives you a proprietary mini VGA port for connecting an external monitor (an adapter for a standard VGA port is included in the box), two USB 2.0 ports, a built-in SD/SDHC/SDXC memory card reader, and a single audio jack. There is also a hidden SIM card slot on the right side of the notebook if you have an existing 3G service plan. The lack of Bluetooth is frustrating, but it's something most people can live without when you're getting a $500 laptop with free Verizon 3G access. The U31SD's specifications are rank-and-file; given the product's intended use is casual computing, they are more than up to the task, however. The second-generation Intel Core i3 processor is fast in its own right. Paired with the dedicated Nvidia graphics card, this machine is even capable of some light gaming. Of special note is the two-year limited warranty, which includes a year of accidental damage coverage. This is not something competitors have matched - and ASUS has been offering such warranty coverage for several years now. The MSRP of $799 is slightly on the high side though the warranty makes up for some of the difference.

Build and Design
ASUS continues to use a now-familiar two-tone silver and black exterior. The U31SD is made of plastic with the exception of the lid backing, which is aluminum. The plastics are of average quality, not thin enough to qualify as cheap but not the opposite either. The chassis lacks internal strength; it twists easily when flexed by the corners. This flexing puts the circuit boards at risk for stress cracks over time, which in the U31SD's case is magnified since the notebook will likely be carried around extensively.

The aluminum display back provides decent protection from pressure; pushing in on the back of the display lid does not yield any significant ripples on the screen. The aluminum is a nice touch; it would have been nice of the palm rest were covered as well; alas, it is only a plastic imitation. Overall the build quality could use revision in the next iteration of this notebook. As it stands, the quality is passable but only barely.

Do-it-yourselfers wanting to upgrade the U31SD will find it relatively simple to do; there is a single large access panel on the bottom of the notebook held on by a single screw. Under the cover are two RAM slots, the hard drive, and the wireless card. Only one of the RAM slots is occupied.

Ports and Features
The U31SD's port selection is best described as adequate. It lacks USB 3.0 and eSATA, and there is no way to add them since the notebook lacks an ExpressCard expansion slot. The U31SD does not have an internal optical drive. All descriptions are left to right.

Our review unit is built for general use computing, but the Intel Core i5 dual-core processor and 4GB of system memory should work well with multitasking. This system will not, however, be able to run most major 3D games without flaw because of the Intel integrated graphics card, the HD graphics 3000. Other upgrade options upon first customization include 750GB capacity hard drive at 5400rpm, 8GB RAM (1333MHz), and a Blu-ray/DVD combo.

Build and Design
The G570's outer build does not differ that much from its prior model, the G560. The G570 has a simplistic design, glossy plastics on the display lid with molded plastics throughout, and brushed aluminum across the entire top of the chassis around the keyboard. With the Li-ion battery, this unit weighs in at just under 6 pounds and measures in at about 1.5" thick, making it doable for light travel.

Even though it is made almost entirely of plastic material, the overall build quality feels very good and considerably solid. There is minimal flex when pushing down on the palmrests, but due to the brushed aluminum it is not significant; the aluminum also helps to keep this area where your palms and hands will rest stay cool even when the notebook is under exertion. The notebook is not, however, as durable as it could be thanks to the plastic build. The bottom plastic panels will hold up fine on your desk if you aren't a frequent traveler.

The chassis itself is solid; when a lot tension is applied to the keyboard there is only minimal flex. Typing with heavy pressure should not cause any problems as far as chassis flex or "bounce" is concerned.

Because of its glossiness, the dark lid will inherently collect fingerprints, dust, grime, and so forth, so be aware that this notebook may be high maintenance. The glossy lid does add a touch of style, however, to an otherwise simple design. The lid also flexes easily when any amount of pressure is applied and when bending it inward at the corners, so much so that ripples did appear on the LCD display. Overall, the build quality is good; my only complaint is the average build quality of the glossy lid.

Ports and Features
The port selection has not changed much since the G560. There is no longer an ExpressCard/34 slot, and there are two more USB 2.0 ports. The overall selection is very good for an entry-level/general use notebook. Notably, there is an HDMI port for hooking the system up to an HDTV, plenty of USB ports (although no USB 3.0), a media card reader, and VGA.

Is Google Peeping into Too Many Places?

Some people fear that Google is growing far too nosy, in light of the search engine maven's buyout of face recognition specialist PittPatt, its insistence on "real names" in Google Plus, and its disclosure of the locations of millions of notebook PCs and cell phones worldwide in 'Street View'.

Complaints about matters related to privacy and identity are nothing new to Google. Last year, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) investigated Google's Street View for Google's admitted, but apparently inadvertent, collection of some user passwords -- and even entire emails -- as part of a project around mapping Wi-Fi networks.

Then in February of this year, some folks voiced alarm when Google got a patent for new technology combining facial recognition and social netorking for visual search results.

"[It's] uncertain as to whether [there will be] arrangements for ensuring compliance with the privacy of individuals," warned a user named jhon, in a forum called desktophelp.in.

Now, Google is stirring worries on three new fronts, all in the same week. On Friday, Google announced the acquisition of facial recognition specialist PittPatt.

Then on Sunday, news surfaced that, back in March, Google had been fined 100,000 euros (the equivalent of about $143,000 US dollars) by the French data protection agency, Commission Nationale de l'Informatique et des Libertes (CNIL).

CNIL imposed the fine following an investigation showing that Google's Street View cars had collected the street addresses and unique hardware identifiers (aka MAC addresses) of millions of notebook PCs, cell phones, and other Wi-Fi devices around the globe. Google's cars were supposed to be garnering location data about Wi-Fi access points only, not Wi-Fi client devices.

Street View House Photos Also Tick Off Users

Actually, among the bulk of users, the Wi-Fi client debacle seems to have sparked relatively little outcry, possibly because PCs and phones are less personally identifiable items than faces, names, or houses, for example.

Home owners have long been highly vocal about Google's practice of keeping photos online in Street View for years that show a messy front yard or don't reflect recent property improvements.

"I guess what I find irritating is that when a person does a search on my address, they still see what it looked like when the former owners had the home and it is an absolute disaster area, junk everywhere. We poured a lot of sweat into cleaning up the outside and it won't be noticed until they retake the aerial photo," wrote mebert91 in the Google Forums, back in 2010.

Such concerns are understandable, considering that some people appear to use Street View as a tool for deciding where to live. "I thought about moving to Calgary or Edmonton [in Ontario, Canada] until I saw [them] on Street View. Thank you Google," wrote Oink, in the British Expat Discussion Forum.

Google Plus Dictates Which Names to Use

Right at this moment, users are complaining directly within the Google Plus Forum about a provision of the User Content and Conduct Policy for Google Plus which reads as follows: "To help fight spam and prevent fake profiles, use the name your friends, family, or co-workers usually call you. For example, if your full legal name is Charles Jones Jr. but you normally use Chuck Jones or Junior Jones, either or these would be acceptable. Your profile is suspended [if after] reviewing your profile, we determined that the name you provided violates our Community Standards. If you believe your profile has been suspended in error, please provide us with additional information via this form, and we will review your profile again."

One user spelled out his reasons for wanting to use a pseudonym instead. "I used the name most people call me on other Web sites. No one I really care about in real life ever bothers to contact me over the computer so I gave up on them. Thus, I never bothered putting my real name up," acknowledged Blaze.

"My pseudonym is more original and less common than most name-surname combinations and allows me to be identified by members of online communities with whom I interact."

Another user recounted what happened when he tried to use the initials "vm" as his handle. "[Google] forced me to [prove] my identity if I wanted to stay [a] member, continue using my current Gmail 'ID' and stay connected with my friends. They asked for my photo ID, if possible," vm reported.

"I think that I don't need [yet] another time consuming community site, especially under [those] conditions," he elaborated.

Google's PittPatt Buyout: 'Ominous News?"

Meanwhile, Googe's PittPatt acquisition is now engendering additional qualms. "Ominous news," responded FoxhoundOp, a member of the HardForum online users group.

Quipped cageymaru, another HardForum member: "Google Street View live edition! Track your friends and family entering and leaving your home while [you're] at work. Oh and the pool boy [who] stayed an extra 5 hours making 'overtime' with your wife."

Also in HardForum, a user called stiltner pointed to possible concerns in the antitrust arena. "[Google] won't call it facial recognition. Hence they can say they aren't using facial recognition. They'll call it, 'Google Book of Faces,' and everyone will flock to it and lap it up," he predicted.

"I'm starting to get worried with Google. Phones. Tablets. Netbooks. Search Results. It might be time for the [FCC] to step in on them and pull an AT&T breakup."

Also on HardForum, when dyzophoria suggested that PittPatt's technology will most likely be integrated into Google Plus, WorldExclusive replied, only half-jokingly: "Didn't know I would have to cancel my Google+ account this early."

If facial recognition does get integrated into Google Plus, Google ought to be prepared to inform users first, and to let them opt out if that's what they want to do.

Social networking rival Facebook drew strong ire last year for failing to take these actions with its own facial recognition technology.

"How about you don't have a Facebook account? Pick up the phone and call your family with any news that needs to be shared and go out and make real friends?" reacted "Anonymous Coward US ID: 1421131" in the Godlikeproductions user forum.
